Wines for the colder months
Steve Edwards considers the changing seasons
Just as chefs look forward to the changing seasons for both the new ingredients that colder months bring as well as for the opportunity to create more warming foods, so do those of us who look after wine similarly enjoy suggesting wines that are more suited to accompany our chillier seasonal temperaments as well as the more robust and substantial foods of winter.
Whereas in spring and summer, we seek freshness above all, crisp, clean, light whites and fruity, not too heavy reds, by contrast, at this time of year, we crave wines with more structure, substance and character. And there is certainly no shortage of such wines to be found from around the world. It’s not just bigger reds, either. I’ve made a selection of four wines from the ABode lists that I think are ideal for winter enjoyment, including a wonderful food Champagne as well as a richly warming after-dinner port.
Jean Moutardier Rosé n/v, Champagne, France bottle £42.00 glass £11.75
This classy Champagne is made from a high proportion of Pinot Meunier blended with Chardonnay. Fairly full pink colour, fine, elegant and persistent bubbles, with a powerful yeasty nose overlayering ripe strawberrry fruit. Full and powerful in the mouth with a creamy finish. A great food Champagne.
Dromana Estate 2003, Mornington Peninsula, Australia bottle £26.00
This 100% Chardonnay wine has a pale gold colour, aromas of peach and citrus fruits which come through on the palate, backed up by the gentle use of oak. Rich yet elegant, and an excellent partner for poultry or fish dishes.
Massaya Classic 2004, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon bottle £26.50
Produced from 60% Cinsault, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah, this wine has deep ruby colour, appealing spicy nose, and rich, chocolaty fruit flavours on the palate. A big wine for winter game and strong cheeses.
Porto Pocas Colheita Tawny Port 1986, Portugal bottle £54.50 glass £7.50
Amber-tawny colour, lovely nose of dried fruits and nuts, luscious in the mouth with notes of raisined caramel. This is a great sipping port or to enjoy with Christmas pudding.
